Viet House Foundation is an effort to raise funds to build basic houses in Vietnam for the poor people, usually impoverished single moms with small children living in deplorable huts. It was launched on the day after Thanksgiving Day in 2014. Within 3 weeks, it received enough donation to build the very first house which was transferred to the recipient in March 2015 in Can Gio, Vietnam. Within 2015, the foundation built three houses and got a start on Viet House #4. The operations of the foundation are simple. It costs about $3000.00 to build a basic house in Vietnam. As soon as the foundation receives enough money to build a house, the candidates selection in Vietnam begins. It is important to note that 100% of the money raised will go to building houses. All other administrative and travel costs are covered by the family of the founder. Everybody who works in this operation, except for the construction workers, is an unpaid volunteer. In Vietnam, the candidates go through a rigorous process of application and verification. The final recipient is then selected and the construction begins, often with the demolition of the existing hut. It would take about 2 months to complete the house before the foundation gives the house to the proud owner in a heartfelt ceremony. Viet House Foundation was launched on "Black Friday" 2014 by Huanvy Phan, then a 15 year old high school student at McClintock High School in Tempe, Arizona. Asked about the significance of the date, Huanvy responded: "I found it was fitting to use the after Thanksgiving 'National Consumption Day' as a backdrop to this philanthropy effort". Her personal goal is to finish at least 10 houses before she graduates from college. Her personal quest to help others was documented on NBC News in July and again in August 2015. Several magazine articles in Vietnam as well as in USA talked about the effort in very positive terms. The foundation received the prestigious award of "Outstanding Youth Leadership in Philanthropy" by APF in 2015. Huanvy Phan was recognized by Tempe School Board during a Board meeting in Tempe on Oct 21st, 2015.
